MySpace Memories: Top 8 Drama, HTML Codes, & Cringey Photos
I recently talked with my fellow millennial friends about how much we miss MySpace. I would actually pay money for my old profile page if it could be recovered somehow. I don't know about you, but I spent HOURS perfecting it only to have it fade away into Tom's closet somewhere.
Actually, here is what happened to MySpace:
MySpace Top 8 Drama
Oh Tom, your first friend when you made your account. Standing at his whiteboard with his welcoming smile. You were left to choose which seven friends would round out the controversial ranking of eight people you liked the most. For me, it was folks I actually knew, plus a couple of celebrities I followed: Snooki from Jersey Shore, Kat Von D, etc.
I remember folks getting salty with each other when they didn't make the cut for the other's Top 8. It was like not getting picked for the kickball team times TEN. When drama happened in real life, like breakups or fights, you would see those collections of faces change ASAP.
MySpace Music
Lots of famous musicians got their start, or at least got major exposure from MySpace. My favorite indie bands had pages where I could follow along to see tour dates and listen to new music. I could even message them and try to flirt with their drummers! No shame! I got a couple of cool dates from shooting my shot that way. Lord, the lessons in internet safety we all somehow survived unscathed!
MySpace Surveys
Because I KNOW you were also filling out those fun little surveys about your favorite food or movie or your mother's maiden name. We were basically just unknowingly sharing all of our future bank security question answers with everyone. However, it was a fun way to get to know your friends!
MySpace Photos
I remember specifically planning out my profile picture too. Of course, this was the era before all cell phones had billion-pixel cameras built into them. So, I had to use a digital camera to take a selfie. You either took a photo of yourself in the mirror, or you tried fifty-leven times to get just the right angle without being able to see what the lens was focused on.
MySpace Fashion & Beauty Trends
It started a trend of blurry, high-angle, emo-tastic shots. Think you have just the right one? Nope! Gotta get those side part bangs positioned over one eye. Or layer on more black eyeliner or one more tank top. Add a belt with studs low on your hips or a raccoon-striped section of hair, and you were the COOLEST.
Not gonna lie, this is a little embarrassing, but I know it will free me from the shackles of cringe-dom. Here is the last profile picture I had before Myspace went "bye bye."
I also ended up as a brand ambassador for a jewelry company, and this was from one of the shoots for a necklace they sold. Like anyone would want a skull and crossbones with slobber on it... ooh, so edgy!
HTML Coding For Baddies
One of the coolest aspects of MySpace was that you could really customize your profile page. Especially towards the end of its popularity. Using HTML coding, you could change the backend of the sections to have cool backgrounds or to feature your favorite pictures. My favorite part was choosing a song to play when anyone visited.
I can't believe I basically taught myself how to do all of that from my bedroom in the middle of the night. Leopard print, sparkly stars, a quote from the movie Heather's, and this was what played as you scrolled:
With the rumors swirling about the return of MySpace as we knew and loved it, I am all for it. Especially if it is simpler and less annoying than Facebook.
