When Cheddar's opened here in Owensboro, it was the first one I'd ever heard of or visited. I can share the same story about Drake's. You could throw Slim Chickens in that pile, as well.

When we've asked for suggestions about what chains Owensboro residents would love to see here, it's usually known properties. If memory serves, Outback Steakhouse and Jack in the Box always get votes. And whatever the possibilities are that those two might one day arrive in our fair city, Owensboro has still done an excellent job of luring businesses to town.

National Chains New to Kentucky

When I see that Louisville and Lexington have welcomed or will be welcoming new chains (restaurant or retail) that are new to my ears, I'll admit to just a tad bit of jealousy. Of course, the fact that they are much larger cities is likely why they get the chains we may never get.

Jaggers

For starters, I wasn't aware Texas Roadhouse even had a spin-off. And now I learn that Lexingtonians have been enjoying Jaggers since August. More of a fast-casual chain than its parent, Jaggers offers eight varieties of burgers, six different chicken sandwiches, tenders, salads, desserts, and a rotating seasonal burger. I can let myself off the hook for not knowing about this one, but there's also a Jaggers location in Louisville. It opened in 2020, and I have no idea how it escaped my notice.

Tupelo Honey

Jaggers looks great, but Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar might be the one I plan a trip around. It's reported 2025 opening in Lexington has been delayed, but when it opens, based on that menu, I'm going.

Having launched in 2020, this young chain prides itself on being one of Asheville, North Carolina's first from-scratch, farm-to-table establishments. And now that down-home, authentic goodness is spreading across the country.

Yes, I'd love to see either closer to my home, but I also don't mind a good foodie road trip when one presents itself.
