I saw someone ask in a Facebook group the other day, "Why on earth has the Moreland Park playground disappeared?" Well, now we have our answer. Owensboro Parks & Recreation has announced a major facelift.

After receiving a Kentucky Waste Tire Crumb Rubber/Tire-Derived Product Grant, the City of Owensboro is excited to bring new life to one of Owensboro's favorite parks and a bunch of discarded tires. I can't remember the last time I thought something tire-related was cool, but this is a really interesting initiative that makes use of "forever rubber" waste.
This doesn't mean Moreland Park is getting a bunch of old tire swings, although that would be fun! It means that one of the new park features will be surfacing underneath the playground equipment made from recycled tires. You may have seen it before at some of our other local parks. It is so much better than mulch or gravel. Recycled rubber molded together creates a safer bouncy surface for kids flying off slides. It also helps people who fall from monkey bars land a little easier. Because it is "poured-in-place" it will enhance accessibility for wheelchair users and those with mobility challenges.
Not only will these upgrades be better for folks playing in the park, it will be better for the environment as well. The Owensboro Parks & Recreation Facebook page shared, "This isn’t just about recycling. It’s about creating a cleaner, greener future for our community. With this grant, we’re not only reducing waste but also paving the way for sustainable practices that benefit us all."

I've been told that fans of the large climbing rock will love that the new design also includes climbing rocks. These sneak peek pictures are not an accurate depiction of playground colors, but they'll give you an idea of what it is projected to look like.

The playground at Moreland Park is currently closed as construction crews work their magic.  Provided no unexpected delays or nasty weather, officials predict the upgrades will be complete by the week of November 18th. Another way Owensboro Parks & Recreation and your elected officials are working to make Owensboro KY’s #1 city to live, work, and PLAY!
