A New Serial Killer Thriller Is Filming in Kentucky
Four years ago, when we reported that Orlando Bloom’s crime drama Red Right Hand was filming in Campbellsburg, New Castle and elsewhere in Kentucky, I had no idea how often I’d be writing about movie crews in the Commonwealth.
Since then, Ethan Hawke has filmed his Flannery O’Connor biopic Wildcat here, Bill Skarsgård has starred in the Kentucky-shot true crime thriller Dead Man’s Wire, and multiple Christmas movies have used Kentucky as a backdrop. The Kentucky Entertainment Incentive helps attract film and television productions to the state.
The Spiral Down Is Filming in Kentucky
Now there’s another thriller to add to the list. The Spiral Down has begun principal photography in Kentucky, with filming in Louisville and Bedford. The story follows an investigation into a serial killer, but the case takes an unexpected turn.
Who Stars in The Spiral Down
Charlotte Kirk, who is also producing the film, stars as Mary Doyle, a woman at the center of that investigation. I’ll leave the details of her role there; this sounds like a movie that would benefit from a few surprises.
Fans of the Saw franchise may recognize Costas Mandylor, who plays an FBI agent and who was quite complimentary of Louisville, telling WLKY he loves “shooting in towns like this. Just walking around, I feel like I’m slipping back in time.”
Louisville Has the Look for a Thriller
I think I know what he means. I’ve been to the 'Ville more times than I can count, and its older homes and businesses give parts of the city a look you don’t find everywhere. I’ve long thought Louisville would make a great setting for a movie.
Nashville native Aaron Mirtes is directing The Spiral Down. No release date has been announced.
