There's no doubt that you will have plenty of time to get to know Mary-Katherine when she joins the show, but I thought I would give you a little primer so you know what to expect when she joins me in a couple of weeks.  I have known Mary-Katherine for years and I adore her. I think you're going to as well.

So, without further adieu, let's get to it.

There's no doubt that Mary-Katherine gets her love of singing honestly. She used to sing southern gospel with her parents, Jerry and Sharon Weber.

#2- MARY-KATHERINE'S DAD WAS "THE MEAT MAN" AT WETZEL'S

If you ever shopped for meat in Owensboro, you likely ran across M-Kat's dad, Jerry. For years, he was known as "The Meat Man" at Wetzel's. He later opened his own shop- Weber's Choice Meats.

Jerry didn't like the word "butcher" at all.  He thought it sounded barbaric and he considered what he did an art. So, Jerry was everyone's favorite "meat cutter" and Mary-Katherine spent much of her childhood in his store.

#3- MARY-KATHERINE'S NICKNAME IS "M-KAT"

Todd Reynolds, the Executive Director of Theatre Workshop of Owensboro (where Mary-Katherine is on the board and heavily involved on and off stage) actually gave her the nickname.  When she was in high school, Mary-Katherine directed James in the Giant Peach at the RiverPark Center.  At that time, Todd was working at RPC. Before that show, people referred to Mary-Katherine as Mary-Kat. But, as she explains, Todd and her "theatre babies" shortened it to M-Kat.

#4- MARY-KATHERINE'S AUNT WAS ONE OF MY DEAR CHILDHOOD FRIENDS

Growing up, Sarah Cravens and I were great friends. We spent endless amount of time together. I have so many favorite memories of her, it's hard to narrow them down to one or two for this story. That said, here's one of my favorites and it's so reflective of just how hilarious Sarah was and the nature of our friendship.  When we were in middle school, Sarah was diagnosed with diabetes. I remember her missing a bunch of school at the time she was diagnosed. I also remember her coming to my place after that and chasing me around my house with her insulin needles.  I HATED needles. Sarah knew it. So, she decided to terrorize me with hers. When I met Mary-Katherine, we realized we had Sarah in common. Sarah tragically passed from breast cancer and we both miss her tremendously. M-Kat and I know she'd be very excited about Mary-Katherine joining the show.

#5- M-KAT LOVES TO DRESS UP FOR HALLOWEEN

Her love of Halloween dates back to when she was a kid and it has barreled over into adulthood. Now, she not only dresses herself up, she wrangles in the family too.

M-Kat says these women are sacred to her. She adds, "These gals are my biggest cheerleaders and set me straight when I need it!"

#9- MARY-KATHERINE & I PERFORMED TOGETHER AT "CABARET NIGHTS"

Both of us have long histories with Theatre Workshop of Owensboro and we both love their monthly Cabaret Nights series. On a couple of occasions, Mary-Katherine and I have performed together. In fact, one night, I borrowed her purse for a rousing recreation of Julia Sugarbaker's "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" monologue from Designing Women.  As I held her purse over my head, everything started falling out of it.  It was hilarious!

#10- M-KAT ONCE WON AN INFLATABLE BULL RIDING CONTEST

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any photos from this triumphant day at Lake Malone, but Mary-Katherine remembers it well.  She says, "Imagine me in a borrowed tube top bathing suit because I left mine at home. Flying through the air after jumping off the SS Glitterbomb (paddle boat) onto an inflatable bull. It was majestic." Looking back, she says, "I changed a boatload of high school boys for life."

So, there you have 'em! 10 Things to Know WBKR's Mary-Katherine Maddox! Get ready for more this May when M-Kat joins me on the morning show.
