Ohio County Community Rally Around Lachlan Kreis Amid Brain Cancer Journey

A fundraiser is planned at Moreland Park in Owensboro for an 8-year-old boy battling stage 4 Medulloblastoma (brain cancer). People across Ohio County, Daviess County, and beyond have been praying and offering support during this difficult time. Zach and Breanna Kreis are living every parent's worst nightmare. Their precious son complained of a headache after school. After an emergency trip to the ER, they immediately did a CT Scan. Their lives were brought to a screeching halt as they faced this unexpected and heartbreaking challenge.

"I remember the nurse saying they weren’t busy and that we should have the results within an hour. After the CT scan, we went back to the room and Lachlan was in so much pain; tossing, turning, crying, and screaming, but nothing helped. As I sat there and held my baby I watched the clock and prayed!",  Breanna shared during those tense moments

After two grueling hours, doctors walked in and shared the devastating news, “Your son has a large mass on the back of his brain”. On November 3rd, 2023, he was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for further evaluation. Three days later Lachlan had brain surgery to remove the tumor.

"He was sick after surgery and couldn’t move without the nurse closing off the drain that was connected to his head because it had to remain at a specific angle. I remember watching the monitors so scared as he slept, watching his breathing decrease and Zach had to suck the liquid out of his lungs to bring his breathing back up." Breanna shared

Eventually, they were transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where Lachlan would start radiation and eventually chemo. After months of treatment, he rang the chemo bell on August 9th, 2024. His journey of strength and resilience is ongoing.

"I know God put us on this journey for a purpose and everything happens for a reason, but it doesn’t make it any easier. If you ask the doctors Lachlan has a 60% chance at survival in the next 5 years, he still has a lot to overcome just with balance, walking on his own, and of course some minor emotional issues, but every day we are just so thankful we get another day with our son.", Breanna shared in August

The family doesn't know recently I had a chance to chat with 5-year-old Ainsley. She is the sweetest brave angel. Here's a snippet of our conversation!

In this clip, she talks about her brother's cancer journey, and about missing her family. Because of school, she stays with her grandparents while her family is in Cincinnati.

Being a Michigan fan like me, Ainsley shared about her Michigan family and her brother's love of the Wolverines. In this clip, she shares more about his cancer journey as only a 5-year-old can.

Lachlan (Bubba) has been described as a tough warrior and a brave fighter. These attributes will be essential in the upcoming months and years ahead. He's not out of the woods yet. Although the road ahead can be hard and uncertain, family, friends, and the community will stand by their side every step of the way. He's in the fight of his young life but isn't alone.

FAMILY & FRIENDS HOSTING A FUNDRAISER

While Zach and Breanna focus on Lachlan's care, their responsibilities at home don't stop. A fundraiser has been set up to help ease the financial burden for the family. Come out to Moreland Park in Owensboro on October 26th, 2024 from 11 AM until 2 PM for a day of fun. There will be a silent auction, food trucks, and more!

PRAYERS CONTINUE FOR LACHLAN AND THE KREIS FAMILY

Faith will remain a strong pillar giving them the strength to face each day following Lachlan's diagnosis. After their entire world has turned upside down, I pray they remain strong and courageous. I pray that the Lord heals his brain and the pain is replaced with comfort. The power of prayer can work miracles, and this beautiful family needs them all.
