I’ve Discovered My New Favorite Dessert in Owensboro
It was once known as the Famous Deli (I remember it well), and then owner George Skiadas renamed it the Famous Bistro and began drawing lunch and dinner crowds. And for the last 31 years, to the delight of Owensboroans and the rest of the tri-state, the popular eatery has been serving up a menu populated with a mix of Greek and American cuisine.
Ekmek -- a Greek Dessert for the Ages
Not too long ago, I had dinner at the Bistro (what locals call it) and opted for dessert, something I don't often do. Now, if you're thinking I went straight for the baklava, you're almost right. I did check for it (needlessly--it IS a Greek restaurant) but then saw something I'd never heard of before. It's called "ekmek." Officially--I looked it up--it's "ekmek kataifi." Kataifi is the pastry that serves as the dessert's base. We're talking an amazing concoction of vanilla custard, chopped pistachios, and cinnamon. But that unique pastry seriously seals the deal. (By the way, that pastry looks like spaghetti. So weird, so wonderful.)
Now, I'm not sure how they make it at the Famous Bistro, and it might even be a secret. But I did find a recipe online, and it's worth bookmarking.
To be honest, they had me at "vanilla custard." And then they went and added all that other good stuff and made me a fan for life. I've since learned that Niko's Bakery also serves it. Score two for the big ekmek fan.
Now I want some. (Don't you?)
