Here’s Where You Could Film ‘The Gilded Age’ in Owensboro KY
One of the hottest series on any streaming platform is the period drama The Gilded Age. Set in 1880s New York City, the HBO Max series details the conflict between old and new money, according to the streamer. It's also become one of its biggest hits.
The Gilded Age - Kentucky Style
Having no direct knowledge of the time period, and relying on a scant few stories one is able to unearth, there were likely class conflicts in every city in the United States, no matter the size. So I decided to "convert" my hometown into a downsized version of The Gilded Age because we have structures here that were brand new or, at the very least, established by the 1880s.
1880s-Era Buildings in Downtown Owensboro
While the insides of these structures very much reflect the 21st century, the facades of these buildings provide ample opportunity for great close-up, establishing shots. Take, for example, the Newberry-Wile building which currently houses The Creme Coffee Shop, among others. In 1881, it was established as Solomon Wile & Sons Clothiers.
Old Coca-Cola Signs
I'm not sure how old this painted advertisement is, but I do know that from 1886 until 1959, the price of a bottle of Coca-Cola was fixed at five cents. So there could be an ad like this in Owensboro's The Gilded Age.
Take a step back in time, now, and enjoy a trip into Owensboro's past, a Kentucky-style Gilded Age, if you will. We're only talking exterior close-up shots, but the history is in tact.
