I've long held good convenience stores in high esteem. Growing up a stone's throw from two of them might be why. Mom: "Hey run over to Convenient and pick up a loaf of bread." Or, "Run to Kwik Pik and get a couple bottles of Diet Coke."

Popular Convenience Store Chains

I haven't seen a Kwik Pik in ages, and I'm not sure the chain in Texas is the same one we had here. As for Convenient Food Mart, it still thrives nationwide, but the brand has been long gone from Owensboro for several years. "Ours" was where U.S. Bank is now at the intersection of New Hartford Road and 27th Street. Here's 1980 Convenient commercial that features the sign I remember like it was yesterday.

I don't see Convenient commercials anymore because we don't have any locations nearby. But I see plenty for the largest convenience chain in the country even though it has no stores in my hometown or even close by. It's something that's always puzzled me about 7-11. Why has Owensboro always been left wanting for a Big Gulp?

Why No 7-11 in Owensboro?

I asked Google, and it referred me to AI which could find no official reason, but it did offers suppositions. One suggested criterion was the availability of franchise partners in the Owensboro area. Franchise Resales explains the process of buying a franchise in Kentucky.

One of them was all about competition, which makes sense. Circle K and Casey's General Stores, the second- and third-largest convenience chains in the country, call Owensboro home. Plus, we have any number of other franchises in town, and there's never a dull moment at Owensboro's Five Star and Huck's locations.

7-11 Opening 500 New Stores

Google AI also led me to the chain's plan to open 500 new stores through 2027. I have no idea if Owensboro will make the cut, but based on what I've read and the number of popular chains that already succeed here in Daviess County, I doubt it.

Before I go, let me make one thing clear. Under no circumstances am I longing for the arrival of 7-11; the many convenience stores we already have are perfectly fine. And we have a lot of them. I was just curious as to why the most iconic name in the convenience store industry has never knocked on the door.
