How to Renew Your U.S. Passport Online in Just Minutes
Fellow world travelers, here's a fun fact you will love. Did you know that you can renew your passport online? I know what you're thinking. Hallelujah. Game changer! I'm right there with you with my passport and pom poms in hand.
I love to travel and I don't know how I missed this a couple of years ago when the online portal went live. Maybe it's because I don't need to renew my passport yet. But, I know how to do it when the next time rolls around.
I typically leave the country two to three times per year. Of course, my passport makes that possible. I took advantage of the Covid-19 shutdowns and renewed mine in 2020. So, my passport still has roughly a third of its shelf life remaining. It's up for renewal in June of 2030.
The good news? Gone are the days of going to the post office or some other grueling passport renewal site. As of 2024, you can now simply do it online from the comfort of your home, office, or smartphone.
The first step is visiting the Online Passport Renewal portal.
You'll find out quickly if you're eligible for online renewal. Here's what you need:
- You're 25 or older.
- Your most recent passport was valid for ten years.
- That passport expires within a year or expired within the last five years.
- You're not traveling within six weeks of applying.
- You're not changing your name or any other personal information.
- Your passport isn't lost, stolen, or damaged.
The second step is beginning the process, which is estimated to take about ten minutes. You'll need your most recently issued passport book or passport card. You'll also need a passport photo that meets the digital photo requirements.
Then, you'll need a debit or credit card for online payment. The costs for renewal are as follows:
Follow the steps and it's truly as easy as that! The site says that processing will likely take between four to six weeks and "your new passport will be mailed after your application is processed."
In the meantime, pack your bags and get ready to set sail or take flight.
