Southern Indiana Summer Social Giving Away a Vintage Corvette

Who's ready for a big ol' picnic to put a period on the summer of 2025? Thanks to July's brutal heat wave, many of us will be glad to see it come to a close. But that can't happen without the huge annual send-off in Rockport, Indiana.

Do you see all those enormous jugs? Dollars to donuts, they are filled with mock turtle soup, a longstanding tradition at the Saint Bernard Summer Social, but in southern Indiana in general. (I have always wanted to try a bowl, but I have yet to make that happen.)

Mock Turtle Soup

I know from past conversations that this tasty concoction is a huge draw at any southern Indiana event, but what is it? As the name indicates, there are no turtles in mock turtle soup, and there never have been. The recipe dates back to the 1700s when turtles were far too expensive to use in a soup. So parts of a calf were used instead. Thankfully, the recipe, which is adapted from real turtle soup, has been updated and features chicken and pork as its centerpiece ingredients. It's become a gigantic midwestern hit over the decades.

When Is the Saint Bernard Summer Social?

The Saint Bernard Summer Social will happen on Sunday, August 17th, on the church grounds. Homemade chicken and roast beef dinners will be available for dine-in or carryout, and mock turtle soup sales will begin at 11 AM when the event gets underway. The social will wrap up at 3 PM.

Dr. Popper Entertainment and George & the Country Boys will provide the entertainment. There will also be an outdoor food court where guests can enjoy a menu of tenderloins, burgers, brats, and soup by the bowl, with plenty of homemade vanilla ice cream for dessert.

A wide variety of raffles will accompany the giveaway of a vintage 1966 Corvette convertible. Take a closer look at this beauty.
