Here’s How to Help Individuals in Owensboro With No Place to Sleep
One thing about Owensboro that makes me verklempt to think about is how our community comes together to help our neighbors in need. Any time there is a natural disaster, a small business puts out a call for help, or even when a family goes through hard times. We rally together.
People give how they can and whenever they can. That is how a lot of our non-profits are able to continue doing amazing work providing services and support to folks who need it. For a town Owensboro's size, we are so fortunate to have a wide array of groups making it the best it can be for everyone who lives here.
Thankfully, entities like St. Benedict's are a soft place for individuals and families to land when they are going through the hardest of times. That's around the clock, 365 days a year. With case managers on site to help people find jobs, training, help with substance abuse. They are always full. The day shelter for women and children is "busting at the seams" and there is a waiting list.
The shelter relies on generous donors to keep the doors open. Executive Director, Harry Pedigo shared, "Of our $750,000 annual budget, an incredible 90% comes from generous community support, with less than 5% coming from church and/or religious contributions. This is where you can make a real impact!" A friend of mine is in a Sunday School class that divided the sponsorship up and each woman gave $25 making it much easier to give.
Today kicks off their annual bed sponsorship campaign where churches, businesses, and even social groups can chip in and contribute to keeping the facility open. With $500 per bed annually, "Your contribution will directly fund the expansion and enhancement of our programs, provide crucial case management, and promote self-sufficiency for our residents. By partnering with us, you will help create a safe and supportive environment for those who need it most."
