Our friends at Veterans Empowered Together are dedicated to supporting local veterans in a multitude of ways. Whether it is cultivating community through social events, hosting memorial walks to honor the fallen, or providing opportunities to improve the lives of those who served our country.

Those are just a few ways this organization works for veterans in need. Brian Basham and Derek "Doc" Van Tuyl are some of our favorite regular guests on the show, promoting all of the events and amazing projects they've got going on. A couple of their programs are solely focused on something they say veterans often struggle with, mental health.

Coming back from traumatic situations of war, losing brothers and sisters in arms, and the obstacles of returning to civilian life can be difficult. One thing that helps is sharing those stories of the good, bad, and ugly, but as you can imagine those things aren't easy to talk about in traditional therapy.

That's why their music therapy project Enlisted: Songs From a Veteran has been very successful. Veterans write songs with the help of local artists to honestly express how they feel in such a moving way. The song is then recorded, a music video made, and shared with the world! The goal is ultimately to release them as a compilation. Here is one of the most recent songs they produced.

Derek recently shared, "September is National Suicide Prevention Month and I have personally lost military friends to suicide. I know I’m not alone and many people have been affected by suicide. V.E.T. has numerous therapy programs to help improve the mental health and well-being of the veterans in our community; the ultimate goal is to end veteran suicide through our out-of-the-box approach to therapy. If you don’t know VET has numerous community partners in Daviess Co. that help local veterans receive the help they need."
