I haven't done it yet, but I've certainly said I would in this space and on a number of occasions. But I just think a road trip centered around museum visits sounds awesome.

Nostalgia Toy & Train Museum

Sure, you can sink your teeth into every Kentucky town's rich history at (FILL IN THE BLANK) Museum of Science and History. That would be wonderful. But there are specialty museums all over the Commonwealth that will fill and itinerary quite nicely. One I've just discovered is one I wish had been around when my grandfather--a railroad man from way back in the day--was still living. He would have had a blast at the Nostalgia Station Toy & Train Museum. And how fitting is it--in context--that I still have a couple of old pieces of rail memorabilia AND an old metal toy truck of his.

If you're in the Lexington area, head on over to Versailles to the old 1911 L&N (Louisville & Nashville) depot that has expertly been converted into a fascinating museum full of wonderful old train memorabilia and some pretty wicked old metal toys. Yes, metal.

And if you're wondering how other visitors have felt about their experiences, then let me show you how Porthos7 of West Chester OH reacted after his visit. He lit up TripAdvisor with this rave review:

This place...just WOW! A small museum of everything and anything train, toys and some nostalgic things as well! Ask for the tour, because there's SO much history and interesting information on things that you'd probably miss on your own. Not sure if I can say it's 100% handicap accessible, so call first - you'll need an hour, but you'll want two with as much as there is to see. Bring cash!

My favorite part of the Owensboro Museum of Science and History has always been the model train set-up. It fascinated when I was a kid; it fascinates me now. Mary C shares that her 4-year-old was just as captivated at Nostalgia Station as I've always been at the Owensboro museum:

This place is so much fun for train enthusiasts! They have two amazing train set ups that kept my 4 year old entertained for ages. He was also very interested in the items on display. It almost made me want to buy one of those $300 full sets and become a train person myself.

There are terrific museums all across Kentucky. When you see one and you have time, stop. There's amazing history everywhere you go in the Commonwealth.
