Fun, Creative Headstone at IN Cemetery Reveals a Couple’s Love of Traveling
Perhaps it's because of what my dad did for a living, but my sister and I have an affinity for cemeteries. Sometimes we visit because they're really old and feature some of the finest artwork--in the form of monuments, headstones, and footstones--you'll ever see. Sometimes it's because someone famous is buried there.
Headstones of the Famous
Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville is a must for anyone who has this particular bent or, as I indicated, anyone who wants to feast their eyes on beautiful sculptures. I made a beeline for Cave Hill once the late, great(est) Muhammad Ali passed away.
And on a vacation in North Carolina, after tooling through downtown Mount Airy--which became Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show--we headed to Siler City where I got a picture of the headstone of Frances Bavier, the Emmy-winning actress who played Aunt Bee on the iconic comedy series.
Our own Elmwood Cemetery here in Owensboro features many enormous and enormously beautiful monuments at its highest peak.
A Vincennes Couple's VW Bus Headstone
In Vincennes IN, at Memorial Park Cemetery, you'll find a most creative headstone that tells me the couple it represents had a love of travel AND the vintage ride they used to take those road trips.
My dad would have absolutely loved this. He probably would have also bookmarked a page at atlasobscura.com that features 27 of the most unusual headstones I've ever seen. There's even one from Antarctica.
Some folks will never visit a cemetery unless it's a necessity, and that is completely understandable. But if you don't have such reservations, you should check it out. Fascinating discoveries and some pretty cool history await you.
