I have a lot of wonderful memories of my time at Western Kentucky University. It's where I met friends with whom I'm still close 40 years later. It's where I learned, and it's where I learned who I was. I learned a few other things, too, but...well, on we go.

Barnes-Campbell Hall was my first dormitory. I only lived there a year, but the impact was felt. It was my first time staying away from home for a length of time like that. It was my first time surrounded only by people that, for the most part, I had just met. It was a big time for change.

Relatively New WKU Dorm to Be Demolished

Fast forward to 2019, when Barnes-Campbell's twin dormitory, Bemis-Lawrence Hall (all female; Barnes was all male) had a fateful appointment with the wrecking ball. In 2021, it returned to take down Barnes-Campbell Hall. The two dorms were replaced by a mammoth dormitory called Hilltopper Hall, which looks like a luxury hotel. Its size was necessary as it was designated as a freshman dorm. Based on the size, I'm wondering if every WKU freshman lived there.

Why Hilltopper Hall Is Being Demolished

Well, coming soon, nobody will live there, because it will be gone. Having opened just seven years ago in 2018, I was quite shocked when I learned it will be leveled. It was quite a beauty (or is, since it hasn't been demolished). Take a look inside.

Even more shocking was the realization that Hilltopper Hall has been closed since February of 2024 due to façade and masonry issues. It was supposed to reopen in 2026, but other, more serious problems were discovered, hence the scheduled demolition.

Two Other WKU Dorms to Close for the Upcoming School Year

On top of all that, Regents Hall and Normal Hall will be closed for the upcoming school year. Both dorms opened in 2021 but are in need of ceiling repairs and fixes that would shore up their resistance to severe weather or seismic activity.
