Over the years, possums have unfairly earned a lousy reputation. And it's funny...I'm sitting here trying to figure out exactly why. I guess it's because they're scavengers? That's the probably the main reason. Certainly their penchant for having unfortunate run-ins with moving vehicles didn't bring that on. How unfair would that be?

The Benefits of Possums

Regardless of the collective attitude toward these American marsupials, their benefits outweigh everything else. No, you shouldn't put yourself in a position that would lead to one biting you, but that's true of all animals. Also, possums can carry diseases, so you shouldn't touch one unless you know it's safe to do so. But that doesn't make THEM the bad guy; those scenarios would unfold because of OUR fallibility.

But possums suck up ticks like a vacuum cleaner and are very good at keeping snakes and rodents at bay. While that's good enough for me, there are multiple OTHER possum plusses:

 

Yoga With Possums

Oh, and they make for pretty darn good yoga partners, as well. Just ask all the folks who have participated in Poses with Possums hosted by Indiana Humane Wildlife. When the January event was announced, it sold out faster than you can say Jack Robinson.

I've seen goat yoga in action and found it to be quite entertaining. Plus, I like goats. But I would have never considered it with POSSUMS. In light of how popular this out-of-the-box idea is, I will now.
