Here in Owensboro-Daviess County, school resumes on Wednesday, August 9th. The Daviess County Sheriff's Office is commemorating the start of the new year school year by increasing patrols around the community.

Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman says the move, being implemented for the first time in department history, aims to ensure the safety of school children inside school zones. It's hard to fathom, but there are some startling national statistics about the frequency with which school children are harmed near the schools they attend.

According to national data, there were 25,000 school children injured between 2012-2022. In that same ten-year time period, 100 children were killed while walking to school. That's precisely why Sheriff Youngman is assigning a deputy to patrol every single school zone in the county for an 8-day stretch that runs from Wednesday, August 9th through Friday, August 18th. Those school zones include each of our school districts- Daviess County Public Schools, Owensboro City Schools and the Owensboro Catholic School System. And patrols will be in place daily before school and when school's dismissed each afternoon.

Sheriff Youngman says, "The traffic detail is a great way to remind everyone that school is back in session and that the school zones are where we need everyone to slow down and pay attention."

And here's your courtesy heads up. Any traffic offenses within the school zone will be enforced- speeding, distracted driving, running stop signs or red lights, failure to wear a seatbelt, etc.
