I've always known my friends, Jody Hulsey and Emmy Woosley to be dedicated community leaders, volunteering their time to local performing arts groups and non-profits. Last week they surprised me when they announced their most recent venture as children's book authors with Of Life: The Rollercoaster.

Of Life: The Rollercoaster Inspiration

Jody, while serving as President of the board of directors for Girls Inc of Owensboro Daviess County in 2018 was privileged to meet one of the lovely ladies in the program who had created a unique art project. "She had used different colored construction paper to describe her emotions and made a 3D rollercoaster as an artistic expression of what she was feeling. I was so moved by the experience that I wrote a poem inspired by the story, had it laminated with a photo of the two of us, and shared it with her."

Author Collaboration

Around the same time, Emmy was directing a play at Theatre Workshop of Owensboro which Jody and his children were participating in. He shared with her the story of this young girl's "positive attitude, optimism, and creativity" and from there Emmy was inspired to create a storyboard based on Jody's poem.

The Perfect Illustrations

Soon after, they searched for a local artist and found Sarah Truman. She was the perfect choice to bring the story to life through her colorful artwork. Jody said "Recently, Emmy and I had the opportunity to share the book, posters, bookmarks, and signage with the girl [who inspired the story] and her family. It was one of the greatest moments of my life."
