Via the Owensboro Police Department:

On March 18th, 2013, at approximately 8:45 p.m., patrol units with the Owensboro Police Department responded to a suicide attempt call at Brescia University, located at 717 Frederica Street.

The initial investigation into the incident revealed that a Brescia University staff member, who was located in a basement office, was armed with a handgun and contemplating suicide. Prior to officers arriving on scene, a family member attempted to disarm the subject, and during the struggle, the firearm discharged. There were no injuries reported during this isolated incident, and no threats were made to other staff members or students.

This case will be referred to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for further consideration.
