When I was a kid, I just thought Santa Claus lived at Santa Claus Land, the small southern Indiana theme park that evolved into the MUCH larger Holiday World & Splashin' Safari.

I mean it was a "Land", and it was named after him. What else was a child to believe? To be fair, it WAS in Santa Claus IN, a town that immerses itself in Jolly Old St. Nick throughout the year. I mean, come on, we ALL know where Santa lives. It's the North Pole, for crying out loud.

I have to tell you something, though. Santa hasn't always spent every waking hour at the top of the world. Sometimes he takes a break. (This writer hopes you've already embraced his tongue-in-cheek tone for what's to follow.)

My dad used to play Santa Claus at both Towne Square Mall in Owensboro and at Holiday World on Fridays.

Your Child Can Send Santa a Letter Right Now

I don't know where Dad ordered that suit, but it was a gem. That, by the way, was his real beard. And he bought prescription Santa spectacles to complete the ensemble. So yes, Santa Claus--more than he normally might--has a very special place in my heart.

That's why I love that we can all start to give the world's northernmost postmaster a break and spread Santa's letters out by sending them now. That's right. You can send a letter to Santa Claus right now.

An no, it is NOT too early for Christmas. The Sears and JC Penney Christmas catalogues used to arrive in August. For all us kids back then, THAT was the beginning of the holiday season. So ask your kids if they want to get started. I'm sure I know the answer.

And if you'd like some tips on how to write the perfect letter to Santa Claus, here you go:

I'd say that's about as thorough as thorough gets. Let's see, if this was me many moons ago, my list would include any number of Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars, probably a Matchbox City, and who knows how many action figures from the Marvel Universe.

What about you? (Or your child, I mean.)
