Selection Sunday is my Christmas. Well, it's another type of Christmas for me. I love it. I get out the notebook on which I have already constructed my own bracket and fill it in as they start naming schools. This year, I already had one filled in before the announcement.
Willie Cauley-Stein has had quiet games. And then, of course, Karl-Anthony Towns or Trey Lyles or Marcus Lee step up. But in Saturday afternoon's SEC semi-final against Auburn, WCS was louder than thunder.
I didn't get to see all of Kentucky's game against Georgia on Tuesday night. I was driving back from Nashville. But I was able to listen to the first half. And I heard proof that the Bulldogs are a very good basketball team.
I absorb as much information as I possibly can about college hoops during its 5-month-long season. Seriously, I'm no casual fan. I'm the guy who'll finish up the Gonzaga/BYU game if it's playing into the wee hours. (And they often do.)
I would imagine that one of the last things the proprietor of a bar in Richmond, Kentucky expected to happen at his place of business over the weekend would end up involving athletes from the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University and the police.
I think the platoon system is a nice idea. But I feel that, more than anything, it simply represents what a deep team Kentucky has. You'd have to have EVERYTHING go exactly your way to do five-in/five-out during the entire length of a game.
