June 22, 2012 About a year ago, I visited The Grand Ole Opry and got to see, for the first time live, the Carolina Chocolate Drops. They opened their segment of the show with the original "Cornbread and Butter Beans" and they rocked it out. But then . . . they launched into a song that sounded VERY familiar to me. Then it hit me! "That's "Hit 'Em Style" by one-hit R&B wonder Blu Cantrell." I hadn't heard that song in years . . . and I had NEVER heard it quite like this. So, this week, because ROMP is just around the corner and the Carolina Chocolate Drops are coming back to Yellow Creek Park for the festival for the second straight year, "Hit 'Em Up Style" is my "Country-Fried" YouTube Cover of the Week. LISTEN!! They just hammer this song. It's funky, fresh and fried like, well, cornbread!

If you heard her collaboration with The Civil Wars, "Safe and Sound" and though, eh, maybe a little too weird, then I think "Eyes Open" will improve your attitude.
Although the very great loss of pop star Whitney Houston loomed over Sunday night's Grammy awards, another name caught my eye in the "In Memoriam" section of the show. I saw the name "Hazel Dickens" and I started to wonder where in the world had I heard that name before?
