The national sensation known as Buc-ee's (I don't know if it's OFFICIALLY a national sensation, but, at this point, it might as well be) has actually confused me from time to time, but it's not Buc-ee's fault.

Facebook friends will post that they are departing for Florida or Gulf Shores or wherever, and the next thing you know, I'm seeing a picture of them at a Buc-ee's Travel Center.

Seriously, when stopping at a roadside convenience store has become something akin to a rite of passage, I think that chain as earned the right to call itself a national sensation.

And hey, forget beach getaways, there are folks who have made specific journeys to Richmond JUST to visit Buc-ee's. Let's face it; Kentucky loves its Buc-ee's.

There's plenty to do and see in Richmond and certainly nearby Lexington; planning a road trip around a Buc-ee's visit sounds like a great idea to me.

Next spring, Kentuckians will begin making similar plans when the Commonwealth's NEXT Buc-ee's opens. Smiths Grove is much smaller than Richmond, but it's in Warren County and is essentially part of the Bowling Green metropolitan area. And we KNOW there's a lot to do there. So get ready, Smiths Grove. You're going to start seeing a lot more traffic when May of 2024 rolls around. But you already knew that since the ground is officially broken.

If you're wondering what the grand opening of the Smiths Grove Buc-ee's might be like, take a look at the same type of extravaganza from just a few months ago at the one in Sevierville TN.

I would say Kentucky's has embraced Buc-ee's unlike anything I've ever seen. But EVERYONE embraces Buc-ee's. From Texas to the East Coast, it is has captured the pop culture zeitgeist with no signs of letting up anytime soon.

No wonder Bucky the Beaver is always smiling.
