What is the answer to: 4 X 4 + 4 X 4 + 4 - 4 x 4 = ?

This problem looks easy but upon further inspection, you realize you have to do more than 4x4+4... You have to use the Order of Operations.

Order of Operations- PEMDAS (all problems are read left to right)

• Parenthesis
• Exponents
• Multiplication
• Division
• Addition
• Subtraction

Order of operations says you should do the multiplication first in this problem. In order to help see where the multiplication is, you can put parentheses around them:

(4 x 4) + (4 x 4) + 4 - (4 x 4).

4 x 4 = 16, so (4 x 4) + (4 x 4)  + 4 - (4 x 4) = 16 + 16 + 4 - 16.

Get it yet? The answer is 20!
