I LOVE learning about bugs. The creepier and crawlier the better! Now, I'd prefer some bugs to stay far, far away from me, but that doesn't make them any less cool.

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest

I recently learned about a really interesting event at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Clermont, Kentucky. Michael, Rollins, and I have been hiking there with friends before and had a great time exploring. They have those huge giant sculptures made from pieces of wood and recycled things that you can discover along the trails.

Along with the giants, Bernheim has a great schedule of events for folks of all ages to learn more about nature. Art installations, workshops, and even a chance to explore the arboretum at night time!

Bernheim Arboretum Celebrates 20th Annual BugFest

On September 16th, from 10 AM to 3 PM they are hosting the 20th annual BugFest. I can't believe this has been going on so long and I am just now hearing about it, but it sounds like so much fun! Here is a video of past BugFests.

Learning About Bugs

Dress up like a bug for the Bug Parade, and explore the observation beehive or insect zoo to learn more about how these little critters play a huge role in our ecosystem. They even have a spider tent which may or may not give me goosebumps, but I would totally have to check it out anyway.

Another awesome aspect of this event is that Kevin Weiner of the Idlewild Butterfly Farm will be there. He also runs a Facebook group called All Bugs Go to Kevin where folks can post pictures of bugs to identify or learn more about them. At BugFest, you'll be able to participate in Monarch tagging to investigate how butterflies transform and migrate.

This event is perfect for children, but as a grown-up, I am all about the activities they have planned as well! Bernheim Forest is such a beautiful park and a wonderful way to spend the day in nature with your family and friends. Admission is a recommended $15 per car or register for a membership and you can visit however often you want for free.
