Indiana Nears Yearly Tornado Average in One Night
Here it is, mid-April and we've already had, what...three or four severe weather events? Honestly, I've lost track, and I might not be alone. Plus, we had a lot of rain in February, too. It's been exhausting.
Extreme Weather
But as far as my level of exhaustion is concerned, it's likely not fair compared to others in the tri-state and what they're dealing with right now. I'm thinking of the folks in McLean County KY where the Green River became a monster as the waters rose to more than 15 feet above flood stage.
Not to mention those who live along the Ohio River.
It wasn't enough that we had multiple severe weather outbreaks, we had to deal with historic flooding, just as we did in 1997 and 2011. (I still can't get over that "every 14 years thing.") But back to those outbreaks, specifically TORNADO outbreaks. Let's go back to the evening of Wednesday, April 2nd.
Indiana Tornadoes
Having just come off a severe weather event the previous weekend that didn't do nearly as much as we thought it would, the April 2nd storm snapped us back into reality. We were under the gun with a Moderate Level 4 risk for severe weather. That almost always means tornadoes. In Indiana that night, it meant TONS of tornadoes.
20 Tornadoes in Indiana in One Night
The average number of twisters that occur in Indiana annually is 22. So far, the Hoosier State has obliterated that number in 2025 to the tune of 44 tornadoes already. And it's just mid-April. Even crazier is what happened on April 2nd. In one night, the National Weather Service recorded 20. If the average hadn't already been shattered, that night would have done it. Here's the map illustrating the number of tornadoes and the track. It appears to have taken a break along U.S. 36 west of Indianapolis.
In the meantime, unless their property sustained tornadic damage, most people in flood zones are concerned with what to do after the waters recede. In Indiana (and, I'm sure, anywhere else), they're hoping they don't hear those civil defense sirens again for a long time.
