Screen Legend Al Pacino Starring in Another Movie Filmed in Kentucky
1999 was a great year for movies. I looked at a list and my mind was officially boggled at the titles I saw. It's always good to get your money's worth when you head to the multiplex, and '99 delivered in spades.
Movies Shot in Louisville
One of the many highlights from the end of the 20th century, was the thriller The Insider starring Russell Crowe as former Big Tobacco executive Jeff Wigand who appeared on 60 Minutes and blew the lid off the industry by revealing what tobacco companies had been hiding from the public all along about the health hazards of smoking.
It was after this episode that Wigand feared for his and his family's safety in light of what he shared. Al Pacino played 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman. Much of the movie was shot in Louisville, and you don't need that sharp of an eye to recognize the skyline. I watched it again a couple of years ago, and it still holds up very well. I recommend it.
Dead Man's Wire
I'm not suggesting Pacino loved Louisville so much that he had to get back to Derby City 26 years later. Also, I have no guarantee any of his scenes in a new Gus Van Sant movie filmed there were actually SHOT there. But Dead Man's Wire WAS recently filmed in Louisville, and Al Pacino is a co-star in it alongside actor Bill Skarsgård whose face you will actually see this time.
No Pennywise make-up. No Nosferatu make-up. Just Bill and Al in the true story of Tony Kiritsis who, in 1977, walked into the Meridian Mortgage Company with a sawed-off shotgun, pointed it at the head of company president Richard Hall, and connected the weapon to Hall's neck via what's called a "dead man's wire." Kiritsis, a real estate developer, claimed that Meridian had sabotaged his shopping center development project.
Skarsgård plays Kiritsis, but any cast list I found doesn't mention what role Al Pacino has. Dead Man's Wire also co-stars two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo.
A release date for Dead Man's Wire has yet to be announced.
