Well, here it is National Volunteer Month and we have an organization in Owensboro--one that relies, a great deal, on volunteers--celebrating in a unique way.

The Boulware Mission of Owensboro Hosts a Wedding for the First Time

Okay, truth be told, the Boulware Mission didn't pick this particular event to celebrate this special month, although this special month is absolutely something to celebrate. This particular event picked the Boulware Mission, so to speak. BONUS...it was a Boulware Mission first.

Michael Chance is a member of the Boulware Mission's security staff. He was also once a client of the mission's and went through addiction recovery there. On Friday night, Michael married his fiancée, Kayla Nix, in the Boulware Mission chapel.

The Boulware Mission -- In the Beginning

You may not know this, but the Boulware Mission has been an Owensboro fixture for more than 100 years. In its infancy, it was the simple mission of Miss Milton Boulware, a school teacher, to provide a shelter for homeless people and to feed the poor. It's original name was the Gospel Center Mission when it opened in 1921, and it also served as a faith-based settlement house as well a safe place for kids to come after school.

How the Boulware Mission Took Shape and Became What It Is Today

In 1922, Boulware officially became a non-profit organization, and its mission began to take shape. A soup kitchen in the 1930s, the Boulware Mission was up to 32 rooms by 1950. And by the 70s, there were more than 1,000 people involved in the mission's monthly activities. In the 1990s, the ball was rolling toward the life-altering or live-saving non-profit enterprise that it is today.

In the early 1990s, the Mission exclusively became a homeless shelter. Life skills classes were incorporated and the need for a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program was recognized.  The program was introduced in 2005.  As the need for client services overextended the capability of the Hall Street facility, the board considered the option of expanding that building. Instead of expanding, the board voted to purchase the vacant Passionist Nun Convent at 609 Wing Avenue.

And now, after more than a century of service to Owensboro, Daviess County, and surrounding areas, the Boulware Mission has experienced a first.

Congratulations to Michael and Kayla, and a huge thank you to Boulware for its ongoing mission of changing and saving lives.
