Many years ago, long before the arrival of the Owensboro Riverfront overhaul that included the all-new Smothers Park, the world-class Lazy Dayz Playground, and the walkway from the park to the hotels and convention center, there was another discussion about a walkway.

Before I get to why we're here, the talk centered around a long paved and railed walkway that would have stretched from the Executive Inn to English Park. That's how long ago it was. Anyway, it mustn't have gotten very far since I can't find anything about it online.

Walking Trail from Bowling Green to Mammoth Cave

That tabled discussion came to mind when I learned that Bowling Green city officials are considering a walking trail, and they're looking for input from the citizenry. Not just any path, this trail would stretch from the city of Bowling Green to Mammoth Cave National Park. If it sounds daunting, understand that the trail would be available to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The plan, proposed by the Barren River Area Development District (BRADD), would also include any necessary infrastructure and facilities like restrooms and water fountains along the trail.

Meeting About Bowling Green/Mammoth Cave Trail Open to the Public

Two public events, on June 4th and June 5th, will shed light on whether or not there is enough interest for agencies to proceed with the project. There are more than 80 miles worth of trails at Mammoth Cave National Park, but that number mostly includes unpaved paths.

It's about a 30-minute drive from Bowling Green to Mammoth Cave National Park. That's hardly a daunting proposition for this sort of undertaking, one that is well worth the meetings and the time spent on research.
