Celebrate the Trash Cat! Kentucky PossumFest Returns for 2024
For a third year, Kentucky's quirkiest and coolest festival is back! Celebrating the cutest little varmint in the commonwealth, possums!
I have to share the funniest possum story that happened when I was in high school. When I went out to do laundry late one night, two little eyes glowed back at me in the dark. I screamed bloody murder and my dad came to see what was going on. I wouldn't let him do anything that would hurt it, so he grabbed the water hose and tried to spray it out. Didn't work. Everything in the garage was SOAKED and the little possum took the high ground and hung out on top of the shelving unit. I secretly gave it cat food until it must have found its way out.
A Possum Festival in Cumberland, KY
Last year, I shared with you a festival in Cumberland, KY that celebrates the affectionately named "Trash Cat," and it returns this year on September 7th from 12PM to 8 PM. Prime possum hours.
Their event page calls it "The weirdest and most wonderful block party around!" I love how they decorate with paintings of fabulous critters. Check out this photo op! Mama possum and her babies.
PossumFest 2023 Food & Fun
Each year, this festival has grown bigger and better. In 2023, there were over 80 unique vendors, activities for kids and families on the Possum Playground, a Stepp Fitness Roadkill Rig Challenge, and live music, it's safe to say this year is going to be awesome too. With chances to meet and greet real possums and learn about how important the little cuties are for the environment.
The PossumFest Planning Posse Looking For Vendors
The first round of vendors for 2024 was just accepted, but there is still room to join in the fun.
If you are a maker, seller, baker of possum pies, or possum gear and more you can apply by visiting the website here. Musicians, cloggers, magicians, possum impersonators, etc. can also apply to perform on the Possumfest stage!
I absolutely love festivals like this. One of a kind with lots of clever events and ways to celebrate something special to the area. BBQ Festivals, Honey Festivals, Strawberry Festivals, and yes, even Possum Festivals!
