Daviess County Public Library Launches Summer Reading Program!
Librarians sure know how to throw one heck of a party! Yesterday, The Daviess County Public Library kicked off its Summer Reading Program with a Fly Into Fantasy event for all ages. Let me tell you, it was a HUGE hit! I don’t know that I have ever seen that many folks at the library before. The decor was magical!
The line to sign up was pretty much out the door the whole time, but it was worth it! All kiddos who signed up for the program got a ticket to exchange for a free book. Rollins picked out the adorable “Escape This Book: The Tombs of Egypt” that has some fun drawing activities inside, but they had something for everyone. Even board books for the little bitty readers.
Across the Children’s Area was the super popular Daniel the Balloon Guy. His cute balloon animals had attendees wrapped around the aisles! I saw kittens, giraffes, swords, airplanes, and even unicorns to fit the fantasy theme. You name it, he whipped it up.
The younger kids made tiny gnome crafts out of popsicle sticks, googly eyes, and cotton balls. Rollins’ gnome was a cyclops after losing an eye along the way somewhere, but it was still precious. The teens got to participate in a collective art project making dragon scales which were added to the Teen Area Dragon. Be sure to check that out the next time you visit the library.
My favorite part was in the outside Reading Garden. Lots of games (including Scrabble!) and blankets to enjoy the beautiful weather and blow bubbles. We had to grab a strawberry popsicle and some pineapple lemonade from the Hello Pop truck, of course. Holy moly, they were GOOD. 10 out of 10!
Adults in attendance could participate in a 30-minute Read-a-Thon earning free Summer Reading totes!
If you missed the party, don’t worry! You can still sign up for the Summer Reading Program which was the star of the show. It runs through July 31st and is a great way to encourage young readers, well all ages really, to make time for reading. The way it works is, you download the Beanstack Tracker App on your phone or tablet or visit https://dcplibrary.beanstack.org/.

Sign up and track your time spent reading. For every hour you read or library event you attend, you will be entered into the grand prize drawing announced at the end of Summer. You don’t have to wait to win though! You could be randomly selected to win one of their awesome prizes like Lego sets, crystal growing kits, or baskets of books and goodies.
Be sure to follow the Daviess County Public Library on Facebook so you won’t miss any of the wonderful activities planned this Summer. I know Rollins already has their Super Mario Day marked on the calendar for next week!
We are VERY lucky to have such an amazing public library. It is so much more than shelves of books. It’s a common denominator space where everyone in the community can enjoy the multitude of resources and fun they have to offer. For FREE!
