My friend Jennifer at Niko’s Bakery is a huge animal lover.  She recently posted a photo of a duck right in the middle of Wesleyan Park Plaza!  Folks can get a little wild over there, and she hoped to warn people so they will be careful when they drive through. It would be a shame for the little lady to get hurt.

Jennifer told me that this time of year, it is common to see a duck around the bakery. We aren’t sure if it’s the same one every year, but wouldn’t that be hilarious? This got me thinking though. Why do ducks wind up in the middle of town? I would guess they would stick to the rivers and the lakes that they’re used to. (See what I did there? Had to!) So, I decided to do a little research.

What I found was actually hilarious.  Lakes and other bodies of water can become overcrowded in the spring mating season. Imagine The Boiler Room back in the day.  Female ducks are inundated with attention from male ducks.  This causes them to seek peace and quiet elsewhere to nest and hatch their eggs. I know a lot of you ladies may find this relatable. Sorry fellas, I hope you understand!

Once the eggs hatch, the mamas lead their babies back to the water which is a safer place for them to grow up.  If you see a duck in town, please leave it be. You can always call a wildlife rescue to come and safely take them to a better location.  Mama ducks especially can be very protective of their babies, of course.  Nobody wants to be chased by an angry mama!

The little quacking shopper at Wesleyan Park Plaza has since been joined by a duck we are assuming is her husband.  That checks right? Show me a husband that has never gotten tired of waiting for his wife in a store!
