For a Quick Getaway, Try Kentucky’s Top Five Natural Wonders

Lately, I'm all about taking short but awesome road trips and exploring that which has yet to be explored. (Of course, I say this as I prepare to leave for North Carolina.)

And, by that, I mean our very own Commonwealth of Kentucky, which offers an UNcommon wealth of quick road trip/staycation opportunities.

I'm always looking for cool places to go.

In my research, I came upon Kentucky's Top Five Natural Wonders at EscapeHere.com.

In this blog, I found no link or reference to a poll that may have been conducted in order to get the final five, but I have no disagreements with what's on the list.

And I say that even though I've never even HEARD of one of them. Shame on me.

First of all, you don't have to be a Kentuckian to take a pretty accurate stab at what's number one. (Hint: it involves a really large cave.)

So let's focus on the rest of the list.

I have visited Cumberland Falls only once in my life and I was 11-years-old at the time. Still and all, even as a kid, I loved it and had great appreciation for the amazing landscape surrounding the falls.

I kinda wish the falls hadn't looked like the world's largest chocolate milk fountain, but why carp?

It had rained.

And, speaking of the Cumberland area, Lake Cumberland is on the list. I'm not sure why it wasn't lumped in with the falls since the water FALLS into the lake, but no matter.

I'm in total agreement with the placement and highly recommend ANY portion of the Cumberland region as a place to get away from it all for a while.

I have never visited the Red River Gorge Geological Area, but my family did before I was born. It's about an hour or so south of Lexington, so it's actually pretty ridiculous that I've never been there.

Finally, I've never heard of the Big South Fork National Recreation Area and that just doesn't make any sense. Until now, when I heard "South Fork," I'd think of the TV show Dallas.

But this is nowhere near Dallas.

It straddles the Kentucky/Tennessee border and, as per Escape Here, is flush with sandstone arches and big bluffs all situated on the Cumberland Plateau. (There's the word "Cumberland" again.)

So, maybe you're looking for a super quick getaway before school or making plans for Labor Day.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with this list.
