Four Years After Brain Surgery, Charlotte Takes the Opry Stage
From Brain Surgery to the Grand Ole Opry: Charlotte's Incredible Journey
I follow the Grand Ole Opry on social media. I love seeing the artists performing, the behind-the-scenes pictures, and all of the really cool moments that happen at the Opry. So when I saw that Stella Lefty was making her Opry debut recently, I was excited to follow along.
Then something popped up in my feed that made me stop scrolling. "Tonight's guest announcers are Harper and Charlotte from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital." Well, hello! I know those two beautiful faces!
Charlotte has become a pretty big part of the Bluegrass Legends Experience Car Show Festival for St. Jude over the past few years, so seeing them backstage at the Grand Ole Opry was already pretty exciting. But then I started reading about what they were doing there, and I realized just how incredibly special this night was.
Just four years ago
Charlotte's mom, Katie Field, shared a post about it, and her words got me. On April 21, 2022, Katie was praying that her two-year-old daughter would make it through an urgent 10-hour brain surgery. Charlotte had a tumor the size of a mandarin orange, and doctors needed to remove it. Katie didn't know what to expect. She said her only prayer that day was that her baby would make it out alive.
Then came the cancer diagnosis, and the prayers changed. Now she was praying that Charlotte would make it through treatment.
Four years later, that same little girl was backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. And Mom's prayer changed a little too! Katie wrote, "Just over 4 years ago I was praying my baby made it out of an urgent brain surgery alive; last night I just prayed she didn't act a fool backstage at the Opry."
I laughed when I read that, but then I got a little emotional because there is SO much in that one sentence. Four years ago, she was praying her baby would survive. Now she's worrying about whether her daughter will act a fool backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. I'll take that kind of mom worry any day!
What a night!
Charlotte and her friend and fellow St. Jude patient, Harper were invited to open the curtain for the Grand Ole Opry and help introduce Stella Lefty for her Opry debut. How cool is that?
It turns out the fun didn't stop there! Stella came back to their dressing room afterward and had the sweetest interaction with Charlotte and Harper. The girls sang "Boston" together, laughed, hugged, and just enjoyed the moment. They also got to meet Vincent Mason and the entire Little Big Town group.
And then I watched the video. Oh my goodness, these girls were having SO much fun!
That's what I love about it. After everything Charlotte has been through, she's still that spunky, silly little girl her mom talks about. She's making memories. She's laughing. She's singing backstage at the Grand Ole Opry with Stella Lefty. And Harper is right there beside her.
These girls are pretty special to us
You've probably seen Charlotte and her sister Madelyn at the annual St. Jude Bluegrass Legends Experience Festival here in Owensboro. They're also always a highlight of my radio broadcast when they're here. They bring the energy. They bring the fun. And they have a way of putting everything into perspective.

I think that's one reason I love having them with us. They don't just tell their story and leave. They become part of our St. Jude family, and every time I see them, I'm reminded of why the work St. Jude does is so incredibly important.
And now look where they are
That's the part I think about. Four years ago, Katie was sitting there praying that her two-year-old daughter would survive brain surgery. Then came cancer treatment and all of the challenges that came with it.
And now Charlotte is standing backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. She's opening the curtain. She's helping introduce an artist making her Opry debut. She's singing "Boston" with Stella Lefty. She's laughing and hugging and meeting musicians. She's just being a kid.
That's a pretty amazing journey. And I'm so glad we get to see this part of it.
This is why St. Jude matters
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we're talking a lot about St. Jude right now as we get ready for our St. Jude Radiothon fundraiser in February.
When you hear stories like Charlotte's, it puts everything into perspective. This isn't just about raising money. It's about giving kids and their families hope. It's about research and treatment. It's about helping families through the worst moments of their lives and giving kids the opportunity to grow up and have nights like this one.
A night at the Grand Ole Opry. A song with somebody they admire. A whole lot of laughing. And a mom who gets to worry about whether her daughter is going to embarrass her backstage instead of whether she's going to make it through surgery.
That's the good stuff!
