Meet Abel Helson, a brave little boy who is battling a rare cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia. There's a fundraiser coming up to help this beautiful family. Here's more about Abe, how you can help, and where you can send him a card!

It's been such a long journey for this Central City family over the last six months.

In the middle of October, 2019 the family noticed that Abe's left eye looked droopy. After trips to the eye doctor and multiple trips to the emergency room for scans and tests, they spent weeks with no answers. Abel just continued to get weak, and finally he was unable to stand or move his arms. The family was frantic and knew that it was time to rush Abe to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and hopefully get a diagnosis. Upon arrival, they quickly did a CT scan and an MRI, which showed that he had three masses in his brain, a mass on his upper spine (neck area) and a mass on his lower spine. Abel had emergency surgery the next day. The next few days after surgery, Abel showed dramatic improvement with his mobility. This little boy is a fighter in every sense of the word.

Abel was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia and sub diagnosed with Primary CNS (Central Nervous system) Pure Erythroid Leukemia. Abe has a very long road ahead of him, but after four more weeks in the hospital he was just released today (6/9/2020), which is some good news to share!

I wanted to know more about Abel, so I asked his Mom to share some special thoughts about her sweet son. Here's what she had to say.

Kyrstn shared, "Abel loves playing outside. He also loves watching tractors and monster trucks on YouTube. No matter what he's going through he will come out of it with a smile. He will throw up and be laughing right after. He doesn't let it get the best of him for sure. Abel does not meet a stranger. He loves making friends with people he comes in contact with."

His laugh is infectious! Press play if you need to put a smile on your face today.

Almost every photograph that I've seen of Abel over the last several months, he has the biggest smile on his face. He just turned four years old a couple of weeks ago. You can still send him a birthday card to show him support and love.

There's an upcoming fundraiser that you'll want to be part of. It's the "Helping Abel Poker Run and Bike Show" happening on Saturday, July 11th, 2020 from 9 AM – 3 PM. All of the fundraising fun will happen at Real Hacienda Mexican Restaurant on Frederica Street in Owensboro. My friends at the Kentucky Hawg Mafia will be hosting the event, so I know it will be amazing. There will be a poker run at 10 AM, a car & bike show, auctions and more! All money raised will go directly to the family for medical, travel and work expenses. It will be an amazing day for the community to come together and fellowship for this little boy.

If you can't make it to the event and you still want to donate, there's a Go Fund Me page set up.
