The first time I ever saw a Gimme a $5 was when I was in Clarksville TN. It looked intriguing, so in I went. To this day, I still have a couple of hand weights I got for five dollars--souvenirs, if you will, of my visit.

Owensboro Discount Store, Gimme a $5, Is Closing

A couple of years ago, Gimme a $5 opened a store in Owensboro to rave reviews from shoppers I knew who visited. From me, too. I have to admit that stores like that are intriguing to me. The merchandise is like those grab bags we used to get at the candy store and glass shop at Holiday World before it closed. Only the "surprises" were in full view.

Unfortunately, and soon, those items will no longer be in full view. Nor will any of the fixtures in the Owensboro location of Gimme a $5. The store has announced it will close, giving the following explanation:

We are embarking on a journey of transformation, a rebranding of our retail stores that is designed to enhance the quality of our services and align with industry trends to best serve our customers for a long time to come. We're excited to announce that several of our stores are evolving and will be rebranded into a new innovative and engaging shopping experience that we know you will love.

We are looking forward to sharing our new retail business model when we unveil the concept on June 16th.

Unfortunately, some of our current store locations are not able to support the upcoming transformation, and stores located in Dickson, TN; Lebanon, TN; Pulaski, TN; Owensboro, KY; and Louisville, KY will be closing.</span>

The last operating days for the current store brands of Gimme A $5, Gimme A $5 Clothing, Half Priced Foods, and Half Priced Bargains will be June 23rd, giving us a week to prepare for the grand re-opening of all the newly rebranded stores.

It's always a sad day when a business announces its closure, and I know fans of Gimme a $5 who are likely disappointed today.

Those members of the GA5 Discount Club can still use their loyalty points online, as they will not renew in July. They may also be used at the store before it shutters on June 23rd. If you have a gift card, you can still use it in-store in Owensboro before that closing day. But since it IS a gift card, it will be honored at any of their other locations.

As for the new concept, Gimme a $5 and its parent company, Half-Priced Bargains, are staying mum until the announcement on June 16th.
