Okay, I'll admit it. I have (ahem) a few years on me, but that doesn't mean I was an original "flower child." Over the years, I've been asked by those much younger than myself what the "hippie movement" was like. All I could tell them was what I've read, since I was barely walking at the time. (You'll have to imagine my raised voice.)
But I can understand their curiosity. That movement is one of the most fascinating cultural happenings in our nation's history, and certainly in my lifetime. I've sought out and found documentaries about the period, for better or worse. It's worth the investigation.
Hippie Fest
I also think the point of this story, Hippie Fest, is worth the drive to Tipton, Indiana, which is a few miles north of Indianapolis. On the weekend of September 26th and 27th, untold numbers of "flower children" will descend upon the small town of just under 5,300 to get a taste of the experiences shared by their parents or grandparents and their contemporaries.
Of course, the folks who were there and lived it will probably make appearances, as well. I mean, it was a long time ago, but they should only be in their 70s. How cool to be able to hear stories from those who lived them.
This event is so popular, there are three others in Ohio, Michigan, and North Carolina. Tickets are also already available.
Sure, it's not happening until the fall, but I doubt the folks who are anxious to go will let any grass grow under their feet regarding the purchase of tickets.
Now...where did I park my Microbus?
