When we used to visit my grandmother when she lived in Louisville when I was a kid, one memory took hold. And I was able to hang onto it because it became like a TV series that lasts for 40 seasons. For what felt like four decades, and maybe more, there was always construction on the interstate highways through Louisville.

Louisville Traffic

Until recently, I was quite critical of Louisville traffic, and the main reason was getting around all the crews. But recent trips have been rather uneventful, and that's good. Seriously, I've just sailed right through downtown without needing to slow down. Very nice.

Interstate 65 Shutdown in Louisville

Beginning June 1st, 2026, though, "sailing through downtown" Louisville will be part of the past, at least for a couple of months. At most, however, that's a large block of the summer, the busiest driving season.

Interstate 65 will shut down on June 1st and remain so for two months, according to projections at i65centralcorridor.com. The closure is part of an enormous endeavor to replace aging I-65 bridges between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) interchange to the south and the Jefferson Street exit downtown.

Louisville Bridges to Be Replaced

During the shutdown, exits at Kentucky Street/Brook Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue near the fairgrounds will see those nearly 70-year-old overpasses torn down and replaced.

Two months is a long time, but it will save a lot of time (a year, in fact) in the long run. The widening of a few ramps to and from the Watterson Expressway is also part of the project, which will conclude on July 31st. At least two lanes on each side will open on August 1st.
