Kentucky Has Its Own Version of Texas’ Famous Cadillac Ranch
Have you ever visited the Cadillac Ranch in Texas, one of the nation's kitschiest roadside stops? Talk about pure Americana.
And not only is it a must-see attraction near Amarillo, but it has also inspired a similar one right here in the Commonwealth.
John Deere Tractor Project
I don't know if Linda Bruckheimer was going stir-crazy because of COVID when she got started on this, but it did happen in 2020. Bruckheimer is a Kentucky native and splits her time between here and Los Angeles, where she lives with her husband, super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer. And six years ago, taking her cues from the Cadillac Ranch, Bruckheimer orchestrated the "half-burial" of ten John Deere tractors at 1215 Taylorsville Road in Bloomfield, Kentucky. It is private property, but there's an area where you can pull off the road and get some good pictures.
The Origins of the John Deere Project
An author, photographer, collector, and lover of roadside attractions, Bruckheimer told Lexington's FOX56 that she discovered Bloomfield while going for a drive and decided to create a roadside attraction of her own. And, voila, a "garden" of John Deere tractors sticking out of the ground.
The project has become such a draw that Bloomfield now sees plenty of visitors who come specifically to see the tractors, and then stick around to see what the town and Nelson County have to offer.
Additionally, Kentucky is no stranger to roadside oddities--the giant fork in the road, for example--so a bunch of tractors sticking out of the ground fits right in.
In all my years, I never thought I'd write a sentence like that.
