This will most likely cause some debate with Hoosiers, but find out why Indiana has been named the state with the best road conditions in America for the second year in a row.

Indiana is known as "The Crossroads of America," mainly because the city of Indianapolis is the hub for several major Interstate highways that crisscross the state, connecting Hoosiers to the rest of the United States. That being said, there are a lot of roads throughout the state that are pretty questionable. Whether it be because of all the potholes, the narrowness, or more than likely, all of the construction, there are several roads that we drive along in Indiana that cause quite a headache for Hoosiers.

However, despite those sketchy roads and the construction we constantly see throughout the state, the "Crossroads of America" is home to some of the best roads in the United States for the second year in a row. Surprised? Me too!

The study by Consumer Affairs used data from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration to identify the states with the worst roads by analyzing metrics, including rural and urban road roughness and traffic fatalities.

Last year, many were shocked when Consumer Affairs named the Hoosier State as the state with the best road conditions in America. Well, Indiana maintained its spot as the state with the best roads. Just 4.8% of its urban roads and 1.6% of its rural roads are in poor condition — the lowest rates nationwide. Overall, 97.4% of roads in the Hoosier State are in pretty good shape, making it the highest rate in the country. The study goes on to say:

Indiana also ranks in the top third of states for fewest traffic deaths, with an average rate of just 1.05 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

However, impressive road quality doesn’t mean that infrastructure investment isn’t an uphill battle — even in a place as famously flat as the Hoosier State. In early January 2026, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) confirmed that it had requested permission from the Federal Highway Administration to turn Interstate 70 — a major east-west artery and key freight corridor — into a toll road.

If the plans move forward, the new income stream could prove critical for maintaining Indiana’s stellar road quality. The same week the toll road application news broke, INDOT announced that more than 300 projects would be delayed due to funding shortfalls.

Are you surprised by these findings? Personally, with the number of potholes, construction, and weird/dangerous intersections I have seen in the state, I thought Indiana would be much lower on this list last year. The fact that it was named the best for a second year in a row makes me reconsider how bad I think our roads actually are. It's nice to know that our roads aren't nearly as bad as some of the other states. That being said, it makes you wonder, if Indiana's road conditions are the best, what are the other states' like?

According to the BMV, personalized plate requests may be rejected if they contain the following, let's call them "red flags:"

  • Carries a meaning or connotation offensive to good taste and decency;
  • Would be misleading; or
  • The BMV otherwise considers improper for issuance.

There's no doubt each and every one of these violates one of those provisions, and most of them violate them all.
