Donuts are a sweet treat that many of us love to indulge in occasionally. According to Sporked, these little deep-fried pastries have been around for a long time; in fact, deep-fried deliciousness dates back to Roman times.
Deep-fried dough balls have been a popular treat since at least ancient Roman times and we still enjoy them today—but is a funnel cake really a donut? The philosophical debate rages on. And, of course, there’s the churro, whose ancient origins are in fact shrouded in mystery.
As far as the name itself, recipes for dough “nuts” started appearing in recipe books in the mid 1700s. Washington Irving even wrote about “dough-nuts” in his 1809 A History of New York.
The Best Donuts in the Country
Yelp is known for hosting reviews of all kinds of things, restaurants in particular. Recently, they averaged reviews of donut places from all across the United States, and they pulled the 50 top donut shops based on those reviews. One Indiana donut shop made the list, coming in at 29, which is a pretty big deal because some states didn't even have one donut shop make the cut.

According to Yelp, Long's Bakery in Indianapolis is the 29th best donut shop in the country, and top donut shop in Indiana.
Long's Bakery has 748 reviews and averages 4.5 stars. Here is what Yelp says:
Indianapolis, IN – Long’s Bakery is an Indy icon, where the line often wraps around the block for their legendary glazed yeast donuts. Open since 1951, this cash-only spot is beloved for its consistency and old-school charm.
