Recalled Freeze Dried Fruit from Sam’s Club was Sold in Illinois and Indiana Stores
Due to a listeria risk, there has been a recall on Member's Mark freeze-dried fruit.
What is Listeria Monocytogenes?
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause some significant health issues if ingested. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Listeria monocytogenes can cause a disease called listeriosis.
Pregnant women, newborn babies, and adults above the age of 65 are considered high-risk groups for listeriosis (this is a reason women are told not to eat deli meat while pregnant).
Listeria Infection Can Be Deadly
Not only can Listeria cause you to get sick, it can also become deadly. The CDC says that about 260 people die from listeria infection annually.
Listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States.
CDC estimates that each year in the United States,
- 1,600 people are infected with Listeria, and
- 260 people die from the infection.
According to the FDA, symptoms of listeriosis range from mild to severe based on the form of the illness. Non-invasive gastrointestinal listerosis and invasive listerosis. Invasive listeriosis sis when bacteria spread beyond the intestines.
For these reasons, any product that is found to potentially have come into contact with Listeria monocytogenes needs to be recalled as soon as possible.
