Serious Injuries Prompt Massive Recall of Walmart Water Bottles
It's time to check your camping gear, your gym bag, and your cabinets. Walmart just announced a massive recall on about 850,000 metal water bottles after two people suffered serious injuries.
Why Walmart Recalled 850,000 Ozark Trail Bottles
Walmart is recalling the Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle after reports that the lids can "forcefully eject." So far, three people have been injured by flying lids, and sadly, two of them suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.
What Makes the Bottles So Dangerous
The recalled product is a silver stainless steel insulated water bottle with a black one-piece screwcap lid and sold under Walmart's outdoor brand, Ozark Trail. The bottle measures about 11.5 inches tall and holds 64 fluid ounces, and was sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com since 2017 for around $15.

The lid can forcefully eject, posing serious impact and laceration hazards, when a consumer attempts to open the capped bottles after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time - CPSC
How to Identify the Recalled Water Bottle
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall applies to model number 83-662. Unfortunately, that model number is located only on the packaging, not on the bottle itself, so consumers may not realize they have this bottle.

What To Do If You Own One
If you have bought one of these bottles in the last eight years, stop using it immediately. In fact, you should take it back to your nearest Walmart location for a full refund. Consumers with questions about the recall are encouraged to contact Walmart by calling toll-free at 800-925-6278 between 7 am and 9 pm Central Time or by visiting online at www.walmart.com/help or https://corporate.walmart.com/recalls for additional information.
