Christian University Suspends Undergraduate Programs

It was announced in an email to students on Tuesday afternoon that Oakland City University in Indiana will be suspending its undergraduate programs and laying off employees.

The Christian university has been under financial strain for some time. School leaders had previously announced plans to sell a carbon capture patent and partner with an unnamed donor company to help ease financial troubles. It appears, though, that the plan fell through or is on hold. The university made no mention of it in the email to students, and 14 WFIE reported the deal did not move forward.

What Happens to Current Students?

While the university says it still plans to sell the patent and hopes to revive undergraduate programs in the fall of 2027, current students now face some decisions.

In the email, the university outlined several options, including a teach-out option for students within 25 credit hours of graduation, taking a temporary leave until undergraduate programs reopen, or transferring to another college or university.

Both the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville have offered to work with displaced students. They'll be offering credit transfers, scholarships, and support through the transition.

“We recognize what a challenging moment this is for the OCU community,” said Steven J. Bridges, USI President. “We understand that every student’s situation is unique, and we are ready to provide personalized guidance that reflects your goals. We can offer clear options and individualized support to help you stay on track and move forward with confidence.”

Graduate students can continue pursuing their degrees online.

Enrollment Numbers and Employee Concerns

According to the Department of Education, the university had 499 undergrad students and a 73% graduation rate.

14 WFIE also reported that more than 100 employees have not received their most recent paychecks, though they are reportedly scheduled to continue working through June 1 to help guide displaced students, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Read the Letter to students:

“Dear Students,

After much prayer, thoughtful consideration, and careful evaluation of the current financial realities facing our institution, we are writing to inform you that undergraduate academic programs will be suspended for the 2026–2027 academic year. We understand this announcement will bring disappointment, uncertainty, and many questions. Please know that our commitment to you remains strong, and our immediate focus is helping every student determine the best path forward. We do believe that within the next year, our carbon capture patent will be sold, and we will reopen in the fall of 2027.
Your administration, deans, advisors, and coaches stand ready to assist you in your next steps.

1. Students Within 25 Credit Hours of Graduation

Students who are within 25 credit hours of completing their degree should contact their major advisor or school dean to discuss possible teach-out opportunities that may allow them to complete their program requirements during Fall 26 and Spring 27.

2. Transfer to Another Institution
Students who wish to continue their education uninterrupted are encouraged to work closely with their dean, advisor, or athletic coach regarding transfer opportunities to another institution. We are committed to assisting students in making this transition as smooth as possible. Since most of our students are student-athletes, you will want to transfer and play sports at another institution. Please work closely with your coach.

OCU has signed an agreement with the University of Southern Indiana which will allow students to transfer to USI. We appreciate USI for graciously working with us and you. If you are interested in this options, please visit https://www.usi.edu/admissions/transfer-students

3. Take a Temporary Leave and Return in Fall 2027

We are confident that the OCU undergraduate programs will return in Fall 2027. Therefore, students may choose to pause their college studies for the 2026–2027 academic year and plan to return when undergraduate programs resume in Fall 2027.
While such a decision presents significant challenges, we remain confident in God’s faithfulness and guidance for Oakland City University and for each of you individually. Your education, calling, and future matter deeply to us, and we are committed to walking alongside you through these next steps.

Please continue to pray for wisdom, unity, and clarity for our entire college community.

Sincerely,

Ron D. Dempsey
