Let’s be honest – everybody needs a little help sometimes. Whether it’s individuals, families, businesses, or even entire states, there are moments when outside support makes a real difference. Most of us would love to be completely self-reliant, but that’s not always realistic. The real concern comes when occasional help turns into long-term dependence.

That’s part of the conversation sparked by a new report from WalletHub, which recently ranked the Most and Least Federally Dependent States in America for 2026. The study looked at how much each state relies on the federal government for financial support. To figure that out, researchers compared all 50 states across two main categories: State Residents’ Dependency and State Government’s Dependency.

According to the report, Indiana ranks as the 8th most federally dependent state in the country. Here’s how Indiana scored in the two major categories of the study:

Indiana Residents Federal Dependency Ranking - 9th

This category looks at how much Indiana residents rely on federal resources. That includes things like the percentage of residents who work in federal jobs and how much money the state gets back compared to what Hoosiers pay in federal taxes. A higher ranking means Indiana receives a relatively strong return.

Indiana Government Federal Funding Ranking - 15th

This measures how much of the state government’s revenue comes from federal funding. Things like infrastructure dollars, healthcare programs, and education funding can all play a role here.

What The Ranking Means For Hoosiers

So what does it all mean? Essentially, Indiana benefits from a fair amount of federal support, but it’s not necessarily out of balance compared to other states. In fact, depending on how you look at it, those federal dollars can help fund programs and projects that improve life for Hoosiers.

There are a bunch of famous folks that everyone knows were born in Indiana, but there are even more that you didn't know about.
