If you’ve ever helped an aging parent get to a doctor’s appointment or tried to juggle your own life while caring for someone you love, you already know the weight of it. Now a new study confirms just how heavy that load has become. Kentucky is facing the ninth-worst family caregiver crisis in the country. With care costs climbing and more Americans than ever stepping into unpaid caregiving roles, the strain isn’t just growing. It’s reaching a breaking point!

High Costs and Long Waits Strain Families

The study, released by Seniorly, a CareScout company, draws on data from the CDC, the Census Bureau, and the Genworth Cost of Care Survey to paint a stark picture of the caregiving landscape. Nearly 40 million Americans are now spending an average of 3.9 hours a day caring for aging loved ones, a number that’s expected to climb as the population of adults 85 and older more than doubles to 17.4 million by 2050. The research also highlights a troubling trend as caregivers’ own health and well-being are taking a serious hit, showing that this crisis affects more than just those receiving care.

Kentucky Faces Growing Family Caregiver Crisis

For Kentucky, the numbers are especially stark. The state ranks 4th in the nation for annual home health aide costs, with expenses averaging $77,792. A staggering 74% higher than the median income of households with someone 65 or older. Kentucky also comes in 12th-worst for its Medicaid home-based services waiting list, with 62,300 people enrolled and 14,892 waiting, a ratio of 4.2 to 1. On top of that, the state ranks 15th for caregiving rate, with nearly 75% of adults aged 50 and older providing care to a family member or loved one.

Why Families Are Feeling the Strain

The study looked at five key factors across all 50 states and D.C.. The share of adults who had performed caregiving duties in the past six months, home health costs relative to household income, the cost of adult day care, the prevalence of multigenerational households, and access to Medicaid home-based care. By analyzing these metrics together, researchers were able to rank states on the severity of their caregiver challenges and highlight where the pressure on families is greatest.

Taken together, the findings reveal a picture of a caregiving system under immense strain. One that affects not just those receiving care, but the millions of Americans stepping up to provide it. From skyrocketing costs to long waits for Medicaid services, the data show why family caregivers are increasingly stretched to their limits.
