On Saturday, June 22nd, 140 classic cars rolled out of downtown Owensboro to embark on The Great Race 2024. One of those teams- Team Bluegrass- was a hometown team. The community came out to support Brian Smith and Scott Howard as they set out on their adventure. The duo had not competed in the race before and set a couple of goals for themselves. #1- They wanted to finish. #2- They wanted, at some point over the 2300 mile, 9-day course, score an ACE. Yesterday, they crossed the finish line in Maine having accomplished both.

In the words of Brian's wife Janice, "They did it!! They crossed the finish line!"  Brian and Scott did it in style too! They tried to make the last leg of the race their best and they certainly made that leg count. They moved from 7th to 6th place in the Rookie Class out of 40 vehicles. Overall, they were 62nd out of 141 vehicles.

In a 2300-mile race, perseverance is the name of the game. Brian and Scott certainly persevered. That final leg got off to a bit of rocky, unexpected start.  At breakfast, another driver told Scott that Sparky (that's the name of Brian's car) had a flat tire. So, Team Bluegrass had to go to work quickly.

The Great Race really is all about teamwork and there's no doubt that teamwork makes the dream work.

The guys got Sparky's tire fixed and the trusty car- a 1930 Model A- propelled them across the finish line of The Great Race. Sparky did its part. Brian and Scott did theirs. Their support team was there for every mile, hug, smile and tear.

Janice says, "Brian and Scott are proud of their performance in the race and coming home with 3 Aces was an unexpected thrill."  An Ace is given to a team that "aces" a section of the course by driving it perfectly.

Janice says, "We all truly feel that they were carried to the finish line on the wings of all of your prayers and we are all deeply humbled by our hometown support. We are grateful and blessed by every one of you. And again we give all the Glory to God!"
