In 2020, when the COVID pandemic shut down the majority of community events, Tim Ross, the Director of Public Events for the City of Owensboro, started brainstorming ideas for how to save the city's annual fireworks show- the All-American 4th of July. The solution? Spread out the fireworks around town. The decision was insanely popular and fun and it stuck. That tradition will continue this Thursday when Owensboro again celebrates Independence Day with fireworks shows strategically positioned throughout town.

Now, there are some traditionalists in town who love going down to the Owensboro riverfront for the 4th. That was certainly a family tradition when I was growing up. Of course, back then, Owensboro's annual fireworks show took place at English Park. When the city committed to revitalizing the Smothers Park area, the fireworks moved to our newly-renovated downtown, which is the perfect setting for the show.

If you want to go downtown this year, there will be plenty of activities leading up to the big fireworks show over the Ohio River. You're encouraged to "bring your chairs and enjoy live music, grab dinner at one of our downtown restaurants, or check out the variety of food trucks along Veterans Boulevard."

Of course, the Owensboro Convention Center is getting in on the action too. They're hosting their annual 4th Fest, where there will be FREE inflatables and carnival games. The Downtown Band will hit the stage at 7pm and the fireworks are set to begin at 9:15pm.

And, as with every year since the COVID pandemic, there will be multiple fireworks locations and all of the shows will be launched in unison. This year's fireworks launch sites are:

Owensboro Riverfront
Southern Little League Fields
Owensboro Warehouse Leasing (Former GE Plant)
Moreland Park

The City of Owensboro's All-American 4th of July is sponsored by Meijer.

If you'd like to listen along with the official soundtrack of the show, it will be broadcast live on 92.5 WBKR.  You can tune in on the radio or catch the show on the WBKR app.
