Restaurant buffets could have their own hall of fame. It's a very old concept, one that originated in Sweden centuries ago as a "smorgasbord," a term that refers to a side table filled with appetizers. A "buffet," from the French, is a piece of furniture on which lots of food is served. My mom had one.

Restaurant Buffets

But the modern "buffet," in reference to a restaurant, has nothing to do with furniture and everything to do with blowing our minds with tons of food options. And how would they get into my theoretical "hall of fame"? It would depend on the uniqueness of the offerings and, naturally, the amount of those offerings.

Without even looking, I'd put the two restaurants at the heart of this story in that hall of fame. I asked Google AI about Kentucky's largest buffets. While it couldn't give me a definitive, objective answer, it did suggest these two eateries.

Emzara's Buffet

Should you want to tackle this 1,500-seat establishment, you'll be dining next to the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky. Sounds like a road trip.

Here's what guests have said about Emzara's Buffet...

I'm giving 5 stars because in spite of the shear number of people the served in a short time, the food was fresh, hot, and tasty, the venue was clean, the ambiance spot on, the service friendly, and there were a lot of food options! Sure to please everyone!

We eat every time we go there. It is served by the Mennonite folks and likely cooked by them as well. The service is polite and the food is like sitting down at your Southern grandma's table. Large seating capacity, eat and drink til' you're full, and the food quality makes this worth the rather high entry price.

Wonderful food. Also very happy with the the gluten free options for my daughter. Staff is excellent as well. The dining room is huge! Btw meatballs rock lol.

Jumbo Buffet

The Chinese restaurant industry capitalized on the buffet concept decades ago and never looked back. How thankful we all are, right? If you are a fan, and you live in Kentucky, you may already know about Louisville's Jumbo Buffet, which lives up to its name, and then some. Goodall's Country Kitchen approves...

So do these folks...

We ate at Jumbo Buffet for my son's 10th birthday dinner, when we arrived the staff asked how old he was he very proudly told them it's his birthday, after our meal the staff brought him a dessert from the buffet with a candle in it she went above and beyond. The food was delicious and fresh and constantly attended to! It's a little pricey for a buffet but certainly worth the price!

Happy holidays, buffet fans, and I hope your eyes don't get too much bigger than your stomachs.
